The Microsoft Work Trend Index 2024 produced a figure that caused unease in many companies: 68 percent of employees now bring their own AI tools to work. Not out of rebellion, but because nobody provides them with any.

For IT leaders that is a double signal. The demand is real – and it is currently organizing itself around IT. Copilot in Dynamics 365 Business Central is one answer that stays within the company’s own system boundaries.

The problem behind the buzzword

Before looking at features, it is worth looking at what actually slows daily work down. The same report names three values that belong together: 71 percent of employees struggle with the pace and volume of work, 61 percent spend too much time searching for information, and 79 percent of leaders consider the use of AI a competitive necessity.

The middle figure is the most interesting one. Searching is not an activity anyone trained for and it creates no value. It is the price of information sitting in several places: in the ERP, in a mailbox, in a spreadsheet on a drive, in a colleague’s head.

What Copilot concretely takes over in Business Central

In Business Central, Copilot is not a separate program but sits in the screens people already work in. The features evolve with every release; the pattern stays the same.

  • Texts are generated from existing master data instead of an empty input field
  • Documents and lines are suggested, while checking still happens by hand
  • Anomalies in figures are surfaced without anyone searching for them specifically
  • Questions about records can be asked in plain language instead of building a report
  • The context stays inside the system – no data is copied into external tools

The last point answers the question from the introduction. Providing Copilot inside the ERP removes the reason for shadow AI. That is less a productivity argument than a governance one, but in many organizations it is the decisive one.

What the figures say about the benefit

Microsoft reports two values from user surveys on Copilot: 90 percent report time savings, 85 percent can concentrate more on important work. Both figures come from the Work Trend Index 2024 and are self-assessments – they measure perceived relief, not stopwatch-measured processing times.

That is not an objection to the figures, but a note on how to read them. Anyone who needs a solid statement for their own organization measures two or three concrete workflows before and after adoption. Quote creation, payment reconciliation and month-end closing are good candidates, because they recur regularly and can be cleanly delimited.

The prerequisite that rarely gets discussed

Copilot works with the data that sits in the system. That sounds trivial, but it decides the benefit. A suggestion for a sales line is only as good as the item master behind it. An anomaly in a series of figures is only an anomaly if dimensions are maintained consistently.

In grown NAV and Business Central landscapes this is often the sore point: duplicate vendors, item groups from three generations, dimensions that once meant something else. A migration is the natural moment to clean that up – because the data is being touched anyway.

The second point is the version. Copilot features arrive with current releases and are tied to the cloud. Anyone working on NAV 2017 or Business Central v14 today has a migration question to settle before the AI question.

How to start realistically

  • Pick a workflow that occurs often and has few special cases
  • Measure first: how long does it take today, how many follow-up questions does it create?
  • Clean up master data for exactly that workflow, not the whole system at once
  • Enable Copilot for a small group and collect feedback
  • Only then expand – and repeat the measurement

This approach is unspectacular, but it has one advantage: after a few weeks it produces a number you can argue with internally.

Conclusion

Copilot in Business Central does not replace expertise. It takes the searching and the retyping away from people who know what is right. The benefit stands and falls with the data foundation – and with a version current enough to receive the features at all.
