It does, however, come with considerable drawbacks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Considerable extra effort and therefore high costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carrying over or reworking code that will be dropped later anyway (keywords: automation objects, dotnet)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No way back<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Hard cut&#8221; on the old system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These drawbacks cover only the technical and cost-related hurdles. Our experience also shows that the longer a migration process takes, the faster user acceptance for the project drops.<br><br>Microsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/dynamics365\/business-central\/dev-itpro\/upgrade\/upgrade-paths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>official website<\/em><\/a> has a help article on the subject. The earliest officially supported route is from NAV 2015 via Business Central 2019 (version 14) into the Business Central cloud. Customers with the many existing NAV 5.0, NAV 2009 (R2) and NAV 2013 (R2) installations usually have no choice but to start with a new installation. All historical data is lost in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another route that departs from the classic upgrade path and can be used from NAV 5.0 onwards.<br>With <strong>DataMigrate Pro<\/strong> (DMP) we offer a flexible way to transfer data seamlessly from NAV to BC. A brief overview of our DataMigrate Pro tool:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep working in the old system (for example NAV 2009)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parallel provisioning of Business Central (cloud)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Lift and shift&#8221; &#8211; both systems can be used in parallel (including transfer of balances, open entries and fixed assets, and reconciliation of number series) with live synchronisation in both directions (NAV 2009 &lt;-&gt; Business Central Cloud)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You decide when &#8220;go live&#8221; happens. Until then, your users can work in both systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DMP allows live synchronisation during parallel operation, which keeps the migration free of interruptions. Master data and historical data can also be transferred at a later point. This flexibility and efficiency make DataMigrate Pro a preferred solution for companies looking for a complete and reliable migration of their data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Setup\">Setup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, the Navision objects of the configuration were installed so that the data to be transferred could be mapped. The DataMigrate Pro menu made it possible to load the structures of the current installation into the mapping tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989569\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-1024x662.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989570\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Field mappings are needed to get the contents to the intended target<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The structures of the target system have to be made available to the migration tool so that the target elements can be selected. A recurring job via SQL Integration Services takes care of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-2-1024x364.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989571\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-3-1024x462.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989572\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mapping JSON files are generated from the configuration. They are read out with an SQL query and the data is transferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Stamm--und-Einrichtungsdaten-\u00fcbertragen\">Transferring master data and setup data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the change log, changes to the master data are now transferred from NAV to BC at regular intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989573\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Posten-\u00fcbertragen\">Transferring entries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a rule, entries are not logged in NAV. For that reason, a mechanism determines which data has not yet been transferred from NAV to BC. Entries in BC may also only be written by the posting codeunits intended for that purpose. In the second part of the setup, a <strong>DataMigration Pro<\/strong> extension for BC makes sure that the posting identity is preserved. Once the entries have been transferred into shadow tables in BC, codeunits of the BC extension are called from the NAV system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Automatische-Schnittstellenpr\u00fcfung\">Automatic interface check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BC extension contains overviews that automatically compare account totals from NAV with those from BC after the data transfer and present them in the role centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ioitempold.dreamhosters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-989574\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">No differences can be seen in the figure above.
